How Do Chemical Peels Work?

The term “chemical peel” somewhat explains the nature of this exfoliating treatment. Specifically, chemical peels work by altering the acidity of the skin. Naturally, the skin sustains a pH of approximately 5.5. A chemical peel increases that to about 3.8 pH. This change in the skin’s pH peel loosens the cells that hold dead and damaged cells to healthy underlying skin. With differing peel strengths, we can encourage just the right amount of cellular turnover to achieve your desired outcome.

What’s Different About A ZO® Chemical Peel?

We offer superficial and medium-grade ZO chemical peels to assist with your natural exfoliation process. The Zo medium trade peel is a 3-step process for which you must prepare with a convenient retinol pre-treatment used for six to eight weeks leading up to your appointment. The Zo® 3-Step Peel™ is designed to treat multiple concerns simultaneously. These include aging, acne, uneven skin texture, sun damage, and even melasma.

This chemical peel is made for significant results with minimal side effects. It’s made with a combination of salicylic, lactic, and trichloroacetic acids, which, together, loosen the outermost layer of skin cells so they slough and peel off over a period of seven to 14 days.

3 Step ZO Chemical Peel

The three steps of the Zo 3-Step Peel include:

  • Step One, the exfoliating peel. In this first step, the blend of the three acids is brushed onto the skin in a thin layer. Saponins are also applied to minimize the reaction in the skin and keep discomfort to a minimum. During this step, you can expect to feel minor stinging and warming. These typically last no longer than five minutes.
  • Step Two, retinol creme application. In the second step of this peel, your provider applies a six percent retinol creme to the skin while it’s primed for maximum absorption. This contains ubiquinone, which stimulates cellular turnover and production while also delivering antioxidants that help protect the skin’s DNA.
  • Step Three, calming creme application. The last step of this peel involves the application of a soothing creme that moistens the skin and minimizes post-treatment irritation. You will continue to apply this creme daily for a few days after your peel.

Is A Superficial Or Medium ZO Peel Right For Me?

We are pleased to offer proven ZO peels in superficial and medium strengths. Studies indicate that, within these levels of peels, most people can achieve remarkable results. Your provider can help you explore your options when you visit us for your consultation.

Superficial ZO peel treatment penetrates only the most superficial layer of your skin. With this treatment, you might prevent the onset of the signs of sun damage and aging. You may also see some improvement in concerns like rough skin and mild discoloration or sun spots. A superficial peel can restore smoother, more radiant skin with no downtime needed. To maintain the effects of this level of peel, treatment can be repeated every four to six weeks.

Medium ZO peel treatment permeates through the epidermis into the middle layers of the skin to remove a more substantial amount of cellular damage. While a medium peel can be used preventatively, more people seek it for the correction of more moderate signs of aging and sun damage. A medium peel can improve your skin’s overall tone and texture. It can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and may treat enlarged pores. This peel can also treat actinic keratosis. To maintain the results of a medium-strength chemical peel, you can repeat the treatment once or twice a year.
